
GOMATHI BOORADA

Gomathi Boorada the Artistic Director of Shivamanohari School of Performing arts, Edmonton, a Kuchipudi dancer who worked extensively in South Asian Dance Drama and theatre for over 20 years. In the past 11 years she worked at SSDM Alberta community theatre in Edmonton in the capacity of dancer and puppeteer presenting shows and offering dance workshops in community schools. She works with Indonesian Institute of Arts and University of Gadjah Mada in the capacity of Guest lecturer offering lectures,seminars and workshops on Indian Classical dances, Dance and Intercultural Understanding, Dance as a ritual and Dance as a cultural Identity.
Gomathi is trained in the art of “Tholu Bommalata” Indian Shadow leather puppetry and “Wayang Kulit” Javanese shadow puppetry at University of Gadjah Mada, Yogyakartha, Indonesia under Mr.Anggara Sri Wisnu.Her strong love of Dance, storytelling and excellent knowledge and experience working with number of artists across Canada, USA, India and Indonesia lend to her work as a trans disciplinary theatre artist. Gomathi Boorada is the recipient of Edmonton Arts Council's Cultural Diversity Award, a number of individual project grants and prestigious Natya Kala Priya from the Government of Andhra Pradesh India.
Gomathi successfully produced 6 full length dance dramas and presented them across Canada, India, U.S.A, and Indonesia. She is currently working on a multidisciplinary theatre production with support from Canada Council of Arts and Edmonton Arts Council "Indra's Web" - Written by Playwright Chris Dodd - to be showcased in 2023. Gomathi worked on numerous Shadow Puppetry productions on stories from the Panchatantra. Her works were presented at the World Wayang Festival in Indonesia in October of 2021. Gomathi also worked as a lead puppeteer in 'Creature in the Dark', Written by Anishanaabe Playwright Joshua Languedoc, produced by the Thousand Faces Festival.
